                                          Katie Gallagher Fall 2012

Katie Gallagher’s Fall 2012 collection, titled ‘Silent Soil,’ pays homage to her roots quite literally and figuratively. The small presentation, which took place at The Standard, draws inspiration from the spirit of our innate connection to nature and present day surroundings; her rural Pennsylvania upbringing undoubtedly lending hand to this conceptual marriage. Sheer silks, wool, leather and shearling dominated the woodsy collection in a palette of black, neutrals and greens. As with past seasons, powerfully structured pieces and layering was seen throughout but always with balance in mind. Strong details such as texture, latticework and sheer paneling was present; Gallagher’s signature tights were also seen on many looks, which playfully touched upon Fall’s Athletic trend. Standout pieces included a tiered dress that conjured the sound of rustling leaves as the model walked, as well as a moss inspired deerskin leather jacket (shot by her father and tanned by her uncle, nonetheless). However, the real show stopper—and Katie’s personal favorite—proved to be a black shearling jacket paired with a black boiled wool, latticework maxi skirt.

Continuing on the dichotomy of nature and city, models stood on a runway of black rubber chips juxtaposed an architectural backdrop of steel industrial beams—reminiscent of urban fairies, should they exist. Gallagher has a strong ethereal aesthetic and it is no wonder that this 6th time NY Fashion Week presenter’s designs have been featured in top publications such as Dazed & Confused, I-D, V, Vogue Italia and more.
