Rick Owens' Spring 2014 show in Paris will be known for the distinctly American step dance routine used to showcase the collection. Taking the theme of tribes and competition, Owens brought in four step groups from the US - Momentum, Washington Divas, The Zetas, and Soul Steps - to both perform and model. Meanwhile, replacing fashion models in the show for a more typical female body actually works well for some of the looser items, as the more athletic silhouettes highlight its wearability without conflict to body shapes. Also of note are the sneakers, which come from Owens' recent collaboration with Adidas and are work perfectly with a step dance number.
The enclosed press release provide more information about the collection:
This collection is about teams and uniforms. Collective spirit and bonding the spirit of competition that has us all band into tribes to compete. In friendly ways and vicious ways. The teams that might be exclusive or might be inclusive.
Runway shows can be about improbably proposals- this is about working with what you have.
Shapes are based on classical shapes - tunics, togas, chitons and armor, but rendered in the simplest and airiest of lines. Our collaboration with Adidas provides a dynamic note with our limited edition running shoe. Fabrics include tightly woven cottons, rigid megaduchesse, and boiled silk turbogazar. Lightweight washed leathers and suedes are cut into tunics, shorts and jumpsuits we refer to in the studio as bodybags. Shorts and tunics are proposed as an alternative to minidress.
