Rachel Comey Spring 2012

WORDS - MEAGAN FREDETTE, PHOTOS - PETER CURTI

When one‘s thought drift off into summer, certainly thunderous drumming and abstract howls are not part of the daydream. That slightly unsettling situation is exactly how the Rachel Comey’s Spring 2012 presentation began, showmanship that seemed perhaps more appropriate to Tisci’s Givenchy.

It wasn’t until the later looks of the show that it all came together in a very “OH, I GET IT” kind of way. She was referencing stormy summer weather with all its turbulence and noise, presented with midnight blues and abstract flowery prints that feel like leaves tossed in the storm’s gusts. The show began with a smaller version of that stormy print blocked across tops and dresses. Color blocking was “a thing” in 2011 and appears to be going nowhere fast as she showed a massive overgrown tote bag printed with blocks of blues, grays, and 2011’s “it” color honeysuckle. Lots of “things” at Rachel Comey, but not overtly so that it became obvious pandering to the trend-hungry whims of street style blogs.
